Saturnino Orestes Arrieta Armas “Minnie” Miñoso was born in Cuba in 1923. He was known for playing for the New York Cubans, a Negro League team, before beginning his Major League Baseball career with the Cleveland Indians in 1949. Miñoso is known as the first Black Cuban to play in the major leagues and also became the first black player to wear a Chicago White Sox uniform when he was traded in 1951. He is said to have played baseball for five decades, and is well known as an important part of Major League Baseball history, beginning his career just two years after Jackie Robinson. Miñoso passed away on March 1 in Chicago.
