One of the best aspects of working at a Museum that brings special exhibitions to the region is the exciting opportunity to collaborate. From a hidden baseball history tour to programs that featured the likes of Carlos Baerga, Jack Corrigan and Les Levine, Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American (on view through September 7, 2015) has definitely been a homerun in that regard. This past Sunday, Maltz Museum Members were invited to a reception at the recently restored League Park. Baseball historian and Administrator for the Baseball Heritage Museum Morris Eckhouse led the group on a tour of the very grounds where (upon opening) Cy Young delivered the first pitch, Babe Ruth hit his 500th career homerun, and the only triple play to occur during the World Series was fielded.
Though the debate as to whether or not baseball remains America’s national pastime continues, it seems to me that everyone has a baseball story to share. From tales of playing ball as a child to recollections of sneaking over to League Park during Sunday school – the best part of the day for me was hearing how baseball has impacted the lives of our Members. For me, baseball has been a way to bring family and friends closer together.
As our Maltz Museum Member events continue I hope they will become a vehicle for rediscovering Cleveland, forming connections with other members and celebrating our community.
