5 Ways to Observe Yom HaShoah by Susan Ringel

On Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 11–12, 2018, we remember the Jews who perished and honor those who survived. It is traditional to light a candle and to attend a commemoration program.

Here are 5 other ways to observe the day:

1. Download the Yom HaShoah Candle App.

The Yom HaShoah Candle App allows you to light a virtual candle on your iPhone.

In the App Store, search “Yom HaShoah virtual candle,” or click here:

The only app of its kind, it was created right here in Cleveland by congregants at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple and is supported by the Men of Fairmount Temple. The app developer is a 16-year-old congregant.

Please share the app with your family and friends under Options > Send Candle to Others.

2. Visit the Maltz Museum.

Celebrate Jewish life in Cleveland and beyond. …

3. Google “Yom HaShoah” on Youtube.

There are hundreds of videos to watch. Try this one for a look at how one community in rural Tennessee educates their students and community about prejudice and intolerance.

4. Try an “old world” recipe.

Were your grandparents or great-grandparents born in Europe? Look up a recipe for an “old world” main dish or side dish and cook it at home. My father-in-law always talked about his mother’s “Kasha Varnishkes.” It’s actually good for you! Click here for the classic recipe.

5. Go to the local library

Browse books on synagogues and temples around the world and choose one with vivid color photographs. The craftsmanship and beauty in these buildings is astounding!
