It was my turn to be out of the game, as we were playing with five women. At that time, the person out, walked around the table after the Charleston was completed and made a silent, written bet on whom they thought would win the hand. What I saw I have never seen before or since in my 60+ years of playing mahj. The woman who was East, after the Charleston, had mah jongg. As the bettor, I realized what was happening and I wrote down her name. At that point, East asked if everyone was ready, at which time she exposed her hand on the rack and said “Mah jongg”!! Everyone had to pay double and, of course, I won, too.
