Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage Announces First Special Exhibition

Brenner’s Photographic Odyssey Featured at Museum

Nov. 12, 2005 –Jan. 8, 2006

Beachwood, Ohio (Sept. 21, 2005) — The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage announces its first special exhibition: The Jewish Journey: Frédéric Brenner’s Photographic Odyssey, featuring the most extensive visual record of Jewish life ever created by a single individual. Opening Nov. 12, 2005 and running through Jan. 8, 2006, the Maltz Museum is only the fourth museum to feature The Jewish Journey.

The exhibition at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is made possible by the generous support of National City.

The 115 photographs showcased in The Jewish Journey depict the global diversity of modern Jewish life in more than 40 countries across five continents. The photographs were selected from more than 80,000 images that French photographer and social anthropologist Frédéric Brenner has captured and created since the start of his 27 year photographic odyssey.

“Brenner’s thought-provoking images are both stunning and challenging, in that they defy long-held stereotypes,” said Carole R. Zawatsky, Executive Director, Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. “Our goal with this exhibition is to encourage conversation and spark new understanding about Jews and their different experiences around the world.”

In addition, the Maltz Museum is hosting special programs to complement the exhibition, including an Artist’s Talk, Family Day and films. (See detail on page 2.)

The Jewish Journey: Frédéric Brenner’s Photographic Odyssey is organized by the Brooklyn Museum and made possible by the Righteous Persons Foundation and other generous friends of the Brooklyn Museum.
