This summer, part of the Maltz Museum’s A Celebration of Family exhibition features the critically acclaimed traveling collection, Love Makes A Family: Portraits of LGBTQ+ People and Their Families. (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) This groundbreaking work will be on view at the Museum from June 2 to September 1, 2024.
Intended for audiences of all ages, Love Makes a Family seeks to offer a window into families that have LGBTQ+ members. Through first-person accounts and positive images, this exhibition challenges damaging myths about LGBTQ+ people and their families.
The exhibit includes 43 photographs primarily by Gigi Kaeser and interviews by Peggy Gillespie and was created by the Family Diversity Projects, a non-profit organization in Amherst, MA. The narratives are designed especially for younger children.
Love Makes a Family can help prevent bullying behaviors and discrimination. By encouraging people of all ages — beginning in early childhood — to affirm and appreciate the diversity of sexual orientation and gender identity, this traveling exhibit contributes to the dismantling of the destructive power of prejudice and intolerance. Love Makes a Family’s mission is to make the world a safer place for all people.
